Fixed Pane Window is Just Right for Second-Floor Living

Fixed pane windows can be as pretty and practical as any of their more nimble cousins. This upstairs apartment setting features a sofa placed right in front of a deep-set window. Raising, lowering, or even cranking open an operable window would be impractical at best, an accident invitation at worst. Put ventable windows in the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. But this apartment shows that a fixed pane window can be as charming as any other type. The first choice was for muntins - slender wooden dividers that add interest by breaking the view into four tall panes. Each part of the view is framed. The stroke of genius was to take advantage of the deep window sill by installing cozy-looking flat-panel shutters, which of course can be opened and closed for control of light and heat. High-key colors add a sense of spaciousness to this intimate living/dining area.
