Most Common Steel Windows Sizes

Standard window sizes for any type of window, including steel windows, are considered a myth, though each window manufacturer will have its own standard sizes. A particular builder may choose a standard window size for a development, the sizes of windows vary. Though one window may be 4 feet by 5 feet, you can get a window 6 inches smaller or 6 inches bigger. The size of a window typically depends on the location of the window in the home and the purpose.

The only restrictions when it comes to steel window sizes are the same restrictions on all home windows, regardless of the material. Many building codes require egress windows, which is a window out of which a person can escape or a window that a firefighter in full gear can gain access to a home. International Codes that are the industry standard specify an opening of 24 inches wide and 20 inches high with a net clear opening of 5.7 square feet (5 feet for ground-floor bedrooms). Egress windows may be made from steel.

Although there may not be common steel window sizes, there are common steel window styles. Styles may include pivoted, horizontal slider, vertical slider, side hung-in and hung-out, project-in and project-out, and fixed and vary by manufacturer. Many steel window sizes are considered "custom" because many companies manufacture steel windows on a per-project basis, though you may come across steel windows that a vendor has in stock that will fit your home.
