To repair steel windows, determine whether you need to replace or repair the entire window--frame and all--or repair or replace the glass or the locking mechanism. Most manufacturers sell sash repair kits (the sash is the movable panel that forms the window frame) so you can repair steel windows frames without replacing the entire window.
What You Need to Repair Steel Windows
- Replacement glass
- A utility or razor knife
- Silicone caulk
- Screwdriver
- Tape measure
- Work gloves
You may also need masking tape, a towel, and a hammer.
How to Repair Steel Windows
Measure the glass exactly. Have your replacement glass ready. Remove the glass panel and sash from the frame. If the old glass is broken, carefully remove the shattered pieces. If the glass is cracked, tape the crack, cover the glass with a towel and break it completely with the hammer. Remove the pieces.
Metal frame window glass is held in place with clips. Remove and reserve clips so you can install new glass with the existing clips.
Remove the old caulking (brush it out if old and dried; otherwise, chisel out with screwdriver). Run a bead of caulk all the way around the frame. Insert new glass. Replace clips and push closed with a screwdriver. Make sure there's caulk between glass and frame all the way around. Remove any caulk from the glass using a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol.
Once the caulk is dry (roughly 24 hours), replace the glass panel and sash in the frame. Now that you know how to repair steel windows, you can save money and handle your own steel window maintenance.
