Homeowners with good carpentry skills will find that installing steel windows themselves can save a significant amount of money. Here is a quick overview of how to install steel windows:

Installing Steel Windows in 10 Steps

  1. Measure the opening the top and bottom for the width, and at both sides for the height dimensions.
  2. Make sure that there is a small gap all around between the window and the opening. This gap gives you breathing room for window fabrication differences, if the opening is out of square, as well as thermal expansion and contraction.
  3. For a frame installation, slide the window into the opening without forcing or prying it into place.
  4. For an anchor strap installation, attach the straps to the window frame at the locations specified by the window manufacturer before you place the window into the opening.
  5. Once the window is secure in the opening, shim it on all sides, making sure it is level and plumb. If you're using anchor straps, they should protrude toward the interior.
  6. Use fasteners to anchor the window into the opening. The fasteners need to be suitable for the type of material the structural opening is made of. If you're fastening through the frame, you'll find pre-drilled holes in the frame. If you're using anchor straps, you'll have to drill a hole in the strap to accommodate the anchor fastener.
  7. Apply a sealant or sealing washer for fasteners installed to the window sill.
  8. Seal the exterior gap between the window and the window opening with a sealant appropriate for the opening material - whether it is wood, stucco, concrete or brick - as well as the gap size and the weather exposure, and the expected movement of the window.
  9. After you've installed the window, check to see that it operates correctly.
  10. Clean your new window with soap, warm water, and a sponge or soft cloth.

Take these simple steps and remember to follow the manufacturer's directions on how to install steel windows, and you should find that installing steel windows is a breeze.
