Window Thinks Small in a Big Way

This window could have done its simple jobs of privacy and ventilation with an uninspiring sliding design. It's typical of good design that every part of it is given serious attention. So this window, probably over a bathroom shower or toilet, is a thoughtful and graceful interplay of rectangles, triangles and curves. The fluted moldings are classically handsome and their shadows add dimension and texture to the composition. The white moldings are the only cool color in a warm palette of buttery yellow plaster, buff brick corner treatments, and a muted terra cotta roof tone. The house shown has a definite southern European influence, but the ideas can be incorporated into other, more contemporary designs. Just remember that no element of the house is too small to create with pleasing design and excellent workmanship.
